Personalization

Liferay DXP includes tools for understanding your users and tailoring what they see.

You can group users by who they are, using static attributes such as profile details and site role, or by what they do, using dynamic behaviors such as the pages they visit. Once defined, you can personalize an entire content page or individual elements to the group.

Analytics Cloud

You can integrate your Liferay DXP instance with Liferay Analytics Cloud. Analytics Cloud integrates DXP with Salesforce(tm) and other data sources to provide even more ways to understand your user base.

Analytics Cloud provides data analytics for understanding user behavior and engagement on every page of your site, covering interaction with both standard and targeted content. It is also where segments are created and synced to Liferay DXP. See Analytics Cloud for more information.

Segmentation and Experiences

A user segment is a group of users who share characteristics such as profile attributes, behavior, or site role. Liferay DXP evaluates user segments on the server, before the page is sent. Going forward, segments are created in Analytics Cloud and synced to Liferay DXP. See Segmentation.

Build user segments by checking for different user property values.

An experience is an alternate version of a whole page targeted to a user segment. You can customize each experience’s layout and content, set their priority, and use them in A/B testing.

Note

You can assign roles to user segments. See Assigning Roles to User Segments for more information.

Content Pages

Content page personalization dynamically changes the page layout and content based on the current user. You can create experiences that provide different text, images, widgets, and even different layouts for any content page based on the current user’s user segment criteria. See Content Page Personalization for more information.

You can create unique experiences for different segments of users.

Collections

Collections organize and display content, and collections personalization selects among them based on user segments. For example, a collection can show featured articles at the top of a page, and a segment of users with more specialized interests can see different articles in that same spot. See Personalizing Collections for more information.

You can personalize content sets to display assets for specific user segments.

Tip

Previewing User Experiences

To preview the experiences users can have on a page, click the Simulation button (Simulation) at the top of the page and select a user segment. The preview shows any content page and collection personalization for that segment.

You can preview different experiences from the Preview panel.

Audiences and Element Variations

Beta Feature

An audience is a group of visitors described by a set of conditions, evaluated in the visitor’s browser after the page loads. Conditions can combine Analytics Cloud segments, built-in browser attributes such as device type and page URL, and custom attributes added by client extensions. Because evaluation happens in the browser, a condition can use values only the browser knows, such as the local time on the visitor’s device.

Element variations change a single element of a content page rather than the whole page, and they target audiences. Variations are applied on top of whichever experience the server selected.

Tip

To vary an element for an Analytics Cloud segment, create an audience with a condition on that segment.

See Audiences and Creating and Managing Element Variations to learn more.
