Creating and Managing Audiences

Beta Feature Liferay DXP 2026.Q3+

An audience is a group of visitors defined by a set of conditions (e.g., the device they’re using, whether they belong to a specific Analytics Cloud segment). You can group multiple conditions together to fine-tune targeting. Once an audience exists, you can create element variations on content pages to personalize parts of the page for the audience’s members.

Prerequisites

Check these requirements before you create an audience:

  • The LPD-85746 feature flag must be enabled for the instance. While the flag is off, the Audiences application is hidden.
  • Your role must have permission to manage audiences. See Audiences Permissions.
  • To use an Analytics Cloud segment in a condition, the segment must already be synced to this instance. See Analytics Cloud.

Creating an Audience

  1. Open the Global Menu (Global Menu) and go to Applications → Audiences.

  2. Click New.

  3. Enter a name in the field at the top of the builder. A name can contain up to 75 characters.

  4. (Optional) Under General Settings, update the audience’s ERC.

    ERCs must be unique.

  5. Click the Attributes Types drop-down to switch between General, Browser, and Custom attributes.

See Audience Attributes Reference for more information on each OOTB attribute.

  6. Drag an attribute from the sidebar and drop it in the Conditions area.

The audience builder shows the Attributes Types selector, the attribute sidebar, and one finished condition in the Conditions area.

  7. Configure the condition.

  8. Repeat the three previous steps to add all desired conditions.

You can drag and drop one condition onto another to group conditions.

Two conditions dropped onto each other form a group that keeps its own conjunction.

You can nest conditions up to three levels deep.

  9. Determine whether All or Any of the conditions must be met for a user to be included in the audience.

All joins conditions with AND, so every condition must match. Any joins them with OR, so at least one must match.

You can configure this setting for all conditions and for individual condition groups.

The root conjunction reads Any and joins with OR, while the nested group reads All and joins with AND.

  10. Click Save.

Important

Audiences are scoped to the Liferay instance, so every site in the instance can target them.

Example: Targeting a Segment on a Phone

Audiences can combine what Analytics Cloud knows about a visitor with what only the browser can report. Suppose the instance has an Analytics Cloud segment named Frequent Buyers, and you want to reach the members of that segment who browse on a phone.

  1. For name, enter Frequent Buyers on Mobile.

  2. Drag Segments from the General attribute type into the Conditions area.

    Note

The Segments attribute only appears when you have at least one synced Analytics Cloud segment.

  3. Leave the operator on Equals and select Frequent Buyers for its value.

  4. Drag Device Type from the Browser attribute type into the Conditions area.

  5. Leave the operator on Equals and enter mobile for its value.

  6. Leave the conjunction bar set to All, so a visitor must match both conditions.

  7. Click Save.

When visitors match these conditions, they belong to the Frequent Buyers on Mobile audience and see any element variations targeting this audience.

Audiences Permissions

Working with audiences requires a regular role that has permission to manage them. Because audiences are scoped to the instance rather than to a site, these permissions belong on a regular role. To assign them, edit the role, go to Define Permissions, and open Applications → Personalization → Audiences.

See Defining Role Permissions for step-by-step instructions.
