Migrating to Segmentation and Personalization
Starting in Liferay DXP 2026.Q1, Segments moves toward a unified experience with Analytics Cloud. The impact depends on your installation type:
-
Existing Customers: Your experience remains unchanged for at least one year. You can continue to create and edit segments in DXP as usual, though a deprecation badge now appears in the interface.
-
New Installs: The module is read-only by default, displaying segments synced from Analytics Cloud. To enable local segment creation and editing, you must enable the deprecation feature flag manually, which will be removed in a future release.
We recommend using Analytics Cloud as your single source of truth for segmentation moving forward.
Starting with Liferay 7.2, Segmentation and Personalization functionality was integrated into the core product. Users of Audience Targeting must migrate their Audience Targeting segments to the core Liferay Segmentation.
There are three steps in this migration:
-
Upgrade to Liferay DXP 7.2+.
-
Migrate custom rules and display properties.
-
Migrate behavior-based features.
First, upgrade to the latest version of Liferay DXP following the upgrade guide. Most of your Audience Targeting configuration is automatically transferred into Liferay Segmentation during the upgrade.
Next, migrate the Audience Targeting custom rules considering the following information:
-
Re-evaluate the need for any Audience Targeting custom rules, taking into account the Liferay Segmentation functionality.
- Some custom rules may have an equivalent. See Migrating User Segments for more information.
-
For Audience Targeting rules with no equivalent, you need to migrate these rules manually.
-
If you need to re-implement a rule entirely, follow the information in Creating and Managing User Segments.
-
You must also migrate the display widgets since the new Personalization features in Liferay DXP 7.2+ use different tools.
Finally, you must migrate the behavior-based functionality in Audience Targeting. Starting with Liferay DXP 7.2+, behavior-based rules are managed using Liferay Analytics Cloud. For more information, see Segments Analytics.
