Liferay DXP 2026.Q1+

Liferay DXP Free Tier lets you get hands-on with Liferay DXP without initially purchasing a subscription. It provides the same core platform as an Enterprise Subscription, suited to learning, development, small-scale use, and proof-of-concept work. Register an activation key on Liferay Marketplace to get started.

What Free Tier Includes

Free Tier provides:

• Core platform capabilities: content management, sites, pages, web experiences, headless APIs, and workflow.

• Clustering for high availability on up to three nodes (see Clustering for High Availability).

• All databases supported by Liferay DXP: MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, IBM DB2, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Some Liferay DXP capabilities — including multi-factor authentication, SAML, and advanced search tuning — require an Enterprise Subscription key. To enable them, see Upgrading from Free Tier to Enterprise.

Note

Free Tier activation keys are valid for 12 months. Renew the key from Liferay Marketplace before the current key expires.

Available Releases

A Free Tier activation key is valid for a given Liferay DXP quarterly release starting from its .0 release through the patched release designated as stable for that quarter. Once a quarter’s stable version is declared, later patches in that quarter are no longer Free Tier eligible — stay on the stable release or move to the next quarterly release. The activation key itself is not version-exclusive; the same key works across multiple quarterly releases.

Getting a Free Tier Activation Key

For the full activation walkthrough — including key creation, downloading the .xml file, deploying it to [Liferay Home]/deploy, and managing renewals from the Customer dashboard — see How to Get a Free Tier Key.

On a fresh bundle, activate your license before the Setup Wizard runs:

1. Start Liferay DXP.

2. Deploy your Free Tier activation key to [Liferay Home]/deploy and wait for the License registered message in the server console.

3. When the Setup Wizard opens, select a database and complete configuration.

Upgrading from Free Tier to Enterprise

To upgrade, replace your Free Tier activation key with an Enterprise key. No data migration or replatforming is required, and the additional capabilities become available as soon as the new key is applied. See Reactivating Liferay DXP for the steps.
