Elasticsearch is Liferay’s native search engine. Beginning with Liferay DXP 2025.Q1, you can operate Liferay with OpenSearch as the search engine.
Refer to the compatibility matrix to understand the version compatibility between Liferay and OpenSearch.
If you’re deploying Liferay DXP with the Cloud Native Experience AWS Ready toolkit, the Amazon OpenSearch domain and Liferay’s connection to it are provisioned automatically.
OpenSearch Limitations
Some Liferay features and APIs are unavailable when you use OpenSearch. These features cannot be used with OpenSearch:
If you need these features, use Elasticsearch instead.
Feature Availability
For Liferay DXP 2025.Q1+, install the generally available (GA) OpenSearch connector application. If you were previously using the beta OpenSearch connector application, you must install a newer version for the GA experience.
