Can URLs be localized in Navigation Menu and in "Link to URL" Layout Type ?

Issue

• We would like to have the possibility to use different external urls for different languages in the Navigation and menu elements and as Layout Type "Link to URL" in "Site builder -> Pages"

• For example:

  • HU: www.google.hu

  • EN: www.google.com

Environment

• Liferay DXP 7.0+

Resolution

• Currently this feature is not included in any Liferay versions.
• A feature request is submitted to analyze a possible change in the future:
  LPD-44255 Localized URL in Navigation Menu and in "Site builder -> Pages" Layout Type "Link to URL

• Workaround:

  1. Create a Custom Field for Site Navigation Menu Item

  2. Create a Menu Display Template

     1. Obtain the localized custom field’s value in the Freemarker template

     2. Optionally hide the existing URL field with JavaScript Client Extensions and also add URL validation

  3. Set the menu display template to display all the navigation elements
