A design library is an instance-level container for design assets that several sites share. One team defines a style book in the library, connects the sites that consume it, and maintains it in one place. A library holds style books and page fragments; this documentation covers its style books.
A design library is a type of asset library, so it has its own members, roles, and LAR export and import.
An instance administrator must enable the LPD-57283 release feature flag before Design Libraries appears. See Feature Flags. Once it is enabled, open the Global Menu (
) and click Applications → Design Libraries.
Choosing Between a Design Library and a Site Style Book
A style book defined in a site applies to that site’s pages only, which is the right scope when one site owns its own visual identity.
Move a style book into a design library when several sites must share one visual identity and one team is accountable for it. Because a style book belongs to a single site, the same token edit is otherwise repeated in every site, and the sites gradually diverge. A brand team maintaining a dozen regional sites edits the library’s style book once, publishes it, and every page using that style book applies the change.
Three properties decide whether that fits:
- Central control. Connecting or disconnecting a site requires update permission on the library, so a site administrator cannot attach or detach their own site.
- No per-site deviation. A published change reaches every page using the style book. You cannot stage the change for review, and a site cannot override it.
- Separate membership. Library roles are independent of site roles, so a site administrator can select the library’s style book for a page but cannot edit it without a role in the library.
Style books remain available at site scope as well. A design library adds a second scope rather than replacing site-scoped style books, so a connected site can still define its own style books alongside the library’s.
