Liferay Content Management System

Configuring Content URLs

Liferay DXP 2026.Q3+

In the Liferay Content Management System (Liferay CMS), a published content item is reachable at its own content URL once a display page template is set as the default for its content type. That URL is assembled from four segments, each set in a different place:

/web/<site-friendly-url>/<slug>/<space-friendly-url>/<content-friendly-url>
URL SegmentWhere You Set ItDefaultChanging It Affects
<site-friendly-url>Site Settings, outside Liferay CMSThe site’s friendly URLEvery page on the site
<slug>The structure builderDerived from the Content Structure Label while the structure is a draftEvery item built on that structure
<space-friendly-url>Space Settings/asset-library-<id>, without the leading slash in the content URLEvery item in that space
<content-friendly-url>The content item’s Friendly URL fieldDerived from the item’s TitleThat item only

A help article in a marketing site reads like this before and after you set the space friendly URL:

/web/marketing/help-article/asset-library-38640/getting-started-guide
/web/marketing/help-article/product-docs/getting-started-guide

A virtual host replaces the /web/<site-friendly-url> prefix entirely.

Content Structure Slug

Set the slug in the structure builder, under General → Slug. While the structure is a draft, the slug follows the Content Structure Label, which is the structure’s title above the tabs, until you type your own value. Clearing the field empties it, and the label takes over again the next time you edit the title. Publish with the field empty and Liferay derives the slug from the structure’s name instead, prefixed with c_.

Important

The slug stays editable after you publish a structure, and Liferay shows no confirmation prompt. Editing it rewrites the URL of every content item built on that structure at once, and Liferay doesn’t create redirects. Set up redirects first.

Space Friendly URL

Set the friendly URL in Space Settings → General → Friendly URL. Opening Space Settings requires the CMS Administrator, Space Owner, or Space Administrator role.

The default embeds a numeric identifier that differs between environments, so URLs built in one environment break when the content moves to another. Choose a value yourself and use the same one everywhere. Liferay stores the value with a leading slash and drops that slash when assembling the content URL.

Changing the value opens the Save Custom Friendly URL modal, which warns that inbound links, bookmarks, and redirects pointing at the space stop working.

Display Page Templates

Content reached at its own friendly URL renders through the content type’s default display page template. See Setting a Default Display Page Template for how to mark one. Liferay CMS content has no per-item display page assignment, so the default is the only template that serves the composed URL.

Linking a specific template from a page produces an /e/ link instead. The content renders the same way, but that link is identifier-based, and Liferay applies noindex, nofollow to it, so those requests stay out of search results.
