Recently, a security vulnerability was filed in Mitre under CVE-2019-11444 arguing that attackers could allegedly use Liferay's Groovy script console to execute OS commands.

Liferay disputes this issue because this is an expected feature where script execution is restricted to those with the server administration role.

Resolution

Liferay has also analyzed the report and found that the necessary permissions checks are already in place in the related action class. Thus there are no vulnerabilities in the deployment.

Lastly, when executing OS commands via the scripting console, the user is restricted by whatever permission the user has in the Liferay DXP or Portal instance. For example, if a non-root user is administrating the application, then even though this user can access the OS, the user is still restricted to non-root user user privileges.
