Adding a Page to a Site

Adding and customizing pages is a key part of managing your Liferay site. You can add pages using the Pages application or through the Page Tree menu.

Note

For Liferay 7.4 U22+ and GA22+, private pages are disabled for new installations. To enable them, see Enabling Private Pages for more information.

Adding a New Page Using the Pages Application

  1. Open the Site Menu (Site Menu), expand Site Builder, and click Pages (1).

  2. To create a new page, click New and select Page (2).

Add a page to the site.

  3. To create a child page, click Add (Add Button) next to an existing page and select Add Page.

Click Add next to an exiting page to create a new child page.

    Tip

Using the Actions menu (Actions Menu) next to the page, you can preview a content page draft (Liferay DXP 7.2+). These options are available for pages in draft status and users with page editing permission.

  4. Under Page Template Sets, select a Basic or Global template.

To start with an empty content page, select the Blank master page template.

Alternatively, select from other available templates.

Select a Basic or Global template for your page.

  5. In the Add Page dialog, enter a name and click Add.

If you created a content page, the page editor appears for adding fragments and widgets; if you created a widget page, the page’s configuration options appear.

To learn how to configure the remaining page settings, see Page Settings UI Reference or see Configuring Page Sets to configure options for a page set.

Tip

By default, new pages are added to the navigation menu for the site. To configure this navigation menu, see Using the Navigation Menus Application.

  1. Open the Site Menu (Site Menu), expand Site Builder, and click Pages.

  2. Click Actions (Actions Icon) next to the page you want to preview and select View.

You can preview pages before working on them.

Tip

Accessibility

Liferay DXP 2025.Q1+

You can navigate the Pages application using only the keyboard to move through the page hierarchy and interact with elements, making it accessible for all users. The following actions are keyboard-navigable:

Tab: Move through elements on the screen. Once a page is selected and highlighted, press Tab again to move through elements within that page.

Up/Down arrows: Navigate vertically through pages.

Left/Right arrows: Move in and out of child pages if available.

Navigating through the Pages application using only the keyboard.

You can perform the following actions: move (1), select (2), edit (3), add child pages (4), open the actions menu (5), and resize the Miller columns (6), which are the resizable vertical dividers between different page levels.

Tip

Alternatively, resize Miller columns by clicking and dragging their edges with the mouse.

Use only the keyboard to move, select, edit, add child pages, open the actions menu, and resize the Miller columns that separate levels.

To activate an option, highlight the element and press Spacebar or Enter. Use the arrow keys to navigate through the available actions.

Screen Reader Support

If you are using a screen reader, the following features enhance accessibility:

Page Focus Descriptions: When a page is selected, the screen reader announces the page name, type, parent-child relationship, and whether the page contains child pages. Use up and down arrows to navigate between parent or child pages. Right arrow enters child pages, and left arrow returns to the parent page.

Drag-and-Drop Actions: The screen reader announces when a move action is initiated, the current target position, and confirms placement once completed. The user is notified of the page’s new position after it has been moved (e.g., Page [Page Name] placed at the root/inside [Parent Page], on top/bottom of [Page Name]).

Active Page State: Notifications indicate when a page is active or in focus, such as when navigating to child pages. When a parent page displays its child pages, its state changes to active, and the option to cancel the action is available.

Focus Retention: After navigating between columns or moving pages, the screen reader ensures focus remains on the current page or element. Focus also remains on the selected child page after navigating into child pages using the right arrow.

Navigation Alerts: If you attempt to navigate to a page that does not have children, the screen reader provides no feedback, and pressing the right arrow key has no effect.
