Issue

  • Do items in documents and media or web content folders inherit permissions from the folder in Liferay?

Environment

  • Liferay DXP 7.0
  • Liferay DXP 7.1
  • Liferay Portal

Resolution

  • In Liferay, documents and web content articles do not inherit permissions from their parent folder.
  • However, when displaying assets in Liferay, the lowest level of permissions for an item or its parent folders will take precedence. For example:
    • If a user has permission to view an asset, but not its parent folder, the asset will not be displayed for the user.
    • If a user does not have permission to view an asset, but does have permission to view its parent folder, the asset will not be displayed for the user.
    • If a user has permission to view an asset and its parent folder (and all folders above the parent folder), the asset will be displayed for the user.

Additional Information

  • Note regarding Documents & Media:
  • Note regarding Web Content:
    • By default, Web Content articles viewed outside of the folder system, for example in an Asset Publisher, are displayed to all users.
    • This is controlled by the setting "Article view permissions check enabled" under System Settings > Web Experience > Web Content
    • This setting is disabled by default for performance reasons, but can be enabled to restrict view permissions for Web Content articles.
