Issue

  • As an administrator, I would like to apply the workflow feature on content pages.

Environment

  • Liferay DXP 7.1
  • Liferay DXP 7.2

Resolution

  • The feature of workflow is not applicable to content pages, as being a limitation of the product.
  • The actual behavior may look like it is possible to use page versioning on content pages, although this option is indeed a known issue.
  • The fact is, without page versioning it is not possible to apply the feature of workflow.
  • As reported, the UI should not allow to create a page variation of a content Page. The reason behind is page variation was originally designed as a quite generic way to address a number of different needs for widget pages.
  • This generic solution is very powerful but turned out being hard to use and difficult to make it work under all the different use cases.
  • For content pages our developers decided to follow a different approach, where variations are supported for each specific use case.
In particular, there is support for variations for:
    1. Personalization: It is possible to create several personalization experiences for each content page, associating it to a page
    2. A/B Testing: it's possible to create variations of the page and perform an automatic test to check which one works better to achieve a given goal.
  • Regarding content pages, these variations are implemented in a completely different way and it would not make sense to use them in combination with the page variations originally designed for widget pages.
  • Actually, applying the feature of workflow for content pages (actually, all types of pages) is planned to be implemented as part of a new feature on our roadmap - in an upcoming DXP version.
