Creating and Managing Design Libraries
Release Feature (LPD-57283) Liferay DXP 2026.Q3+
A design library holds the design assets its connected sites share, and one team maintains them there instead of in each site.
Creating a library requires the Add Asset Library permission. Without it, New Design Library does not appear.
Creating a Design Library
-
Open the Global Menu (
) and click Applications → Design Libraries. -
Click New Design Library.
-
Enter a Name, using 75 characters or fewer. Each library’s name must be unique.
-
Enter a Description. This field is optional.
-
Click Save.
Liferay DXP confirms the library was created and opens it.
Editing Design Library Settings
-
Open the library and click More Actions (
) → Settings. -
Edit the fields you want to change:
Name: The library’s name, 75 characters or fewer. Renaming the library updates the title shown for it.
Description: An optional description.
Group ID: The identifier Liferay DXP assigns the library. You cannot edit this value.
ERC: The external reference code. Use it to reference the library from the headless APIs, and to match this library to the same library in another environment.
-
Click Save, or click Cancel to discard your changes.
Settings requires update permission on the library.
Exporting and Importing a Design Library
A design library uses the standard LAR export and import in Liferay DXP, so you can move one between environments. Both actions require update permission on the library.
You can reach them from the library itself or from the list:
- Open the library and click More Actions (
), then click Export or Import. - On the Design Libraries list, click Actions (
) on the library’s row, then click Export or Import.
Export opens the Export application scoped to that library, and Import opens the Import application. See Exporting and Importing Style Books for how style book content behaves in a LAR file.
Deleting a Design Library
Deleting a library requires delete permission on it. The library’s row Actions (
) menu also offers Delete.
Deleting a design library permanently removes all of its design assets, including its style books, and disconnects every site connected to it. This action cannot be undone.
A page that used one of the deleted style books keeps rendering. It falls back to its master page’s style book, then to the site’s default style book for its theme.
-
Open the library and click More Actions (
) → Delete. -
Confirm the deletion.
