Issue
- In the 'Forgot Password' option, while trying to provide an email id that doesn't exist in the database, the user can proceed to answer the security question. Whereas an error is not popped up saying the user's email address does not exist. Also, in this case, the security question doesn't exist in the DB.
Resolution
- This is intended behavior. It's a fairly well-accepted idea within the security community that revealing that a specific email is or is not registered is actually a security vulnerability. This is because verifying that an email address is valid or not valid, can give malicious actors information such as whether a certain username is a valid one or not. It is to prevent attacks such as user enumeration attacks, which is what has been described above.
