Issue

Do we need to upgrade the Tomcat version when we upgrade to a Liferay version?

Environment

Liferay DXP 7.2

Resolution

A Fix Pack doesn't change the Tomcat version, it only patches Liferay that was deployed inside Tomcat and the osgi modules. A Liferay bundle in a Service Pack release (e.g. SP4), slim bundle, or fix pack bundle can contain an updated version of the Application Server (e.g. SP4 bundle that already contains Tomcat 9.0.40), but this is only for convenience, to make sure new environments (and new Liferay users) are using a more up to date version.

Additional Information

The process is completely separate from Liferay as it needs to be done in the Application Server level, so hotfixes and fix packs won't have any effect on this:
