The Project Usage page on Customer Portal is the definitive source for up-to-date traffic and resource usage of your cloud environments. It is intended to give you a clear picture of the amount of resources available to your project allowing you to track the usage over time and plan for future growth. This article covers common questions customers may have about this page, where the metrics come from, and what they mean.

What is measured?

Sites: Total number of unique Liferay DXP sites, each comprising a set of pages and their related content.

RAM: The amount of RAM allocated across all extension environments.

vCPU: The amount of virtual CPUs allocated across all extension environments.

Storage: The amount of Document Library storage space available for your projects.

MALU: Monthly Active Logged-in Users - The aggregate number of authenticated users that have visited each customer site at least once in the calendar month.
APV: Anonymous Page Views - The aggregate number of anonymous page views across all customer sites during a subscription term.

How are MALUs and APVs calculated?

  • Requests performed by unknown(Guest) users are excluded from MALU calculations. Each user will be counted once for each site they access in a calendar month.
  • Requests coming from Liferay Monitoring/Health Check Systems and popular Internet crawler bots are filtered out of APV calculations. Headless calls, External services requests and other types of bots are counted.
  • Identical IP addresses requesting the same resource within a 10-minute window are counted as a single APV.
  • MALU and APV consumption is tracked across all environments(prd, uat, dev, etc.).
  • These metrics reset at the end of the current subscription period.

How often is the usage page updated?

Metrics on the Project Usage page are updated once a day except for Sites which are updated monthly.

Am I billed for DDoS attacks?

No. Once the traffic from a denial of service attack is recognized, subsequent requests are blocked and not counted in the usage calculation.

Why does Analytics Cloud show different values?

The two tools have different purposes and are expected to have different calculations and different results even for similar metrics. Analytics Cloud usage tracks user behavior with the purpose of providing detailed information on the sites, pages, assets, and users on a given environment, mainly pulling directly from the DXP server itself. Customer Portal usage tracks the consumption of all of the project's available resources with the purpose of showing you overall usage of the environments as a whole, mainly pulling from the surrounding infrastructure like the web server. This means that similar metrics like active users will vary significantly.

Analytics Cloud metrics are impacted by these factors that do not impact Customer Portal metrics

  • Whether users are authenticated
  • Whether users opt out of tracking
  • Whether ad blockers are used
  • Which sites users choose to sync

Customer Portal metrics are impacted by these factors that do not impact Analytics Cloud metrics

  • Search engine crawlers
  • Various internet bots
  • External API calls
  • All environments on the project

Why does Google Analytics show different values?

Like Analytics Cloud, Google Analytics is intended to provide details on end-user activity and how they interact with tracked sites. And in the same way, Google Analytics metrics will vary significantly when compared to metrics from Customer Portal.

Why am I billed for non-human traffic?

Any site, whether hosted on premise or by a cloud provider, will incur costs for all traffic whether it is human or non-human. Liferay Cloud is no different. This traffic reaches the web server and is therefore part of the cost of hosting the site.

How do I report an issue or discrepancy?

Issues can be reported by submitting a ticket to Liferay Support.

What happens if I go over the limit?

Your Account Manager will reach out to you about plan upgrade options.
